WHO WE ARE

In pursuance of the Indian Church Measures (Indian Church Act, 1927)—an Act enacted on 22nd December 1927 to provide for the dissolution of the legal union between the Church of England and the Church of England in India—and in accordance with Section 2 (IV) of the said Act, it was declared that:

PREAMBLE (Historical Statement)

  • Church Missionary Society (CMS), incorporated in England

  • Church Missionary Trust Association Limited (CMTA Ltd.), incorporated in England

  • Church of England Zenana Missionary Society (CEZMS), incorporated in England

“Every ecclesiastical corporation of the Indian Church, whether sole or aggregate, shall be dissolved.”

This dissolution was executed in accordance with the provisions of both the Indian Church Act, 1927 and the Indian Church Measures, 1927.

Consequently, the following missionary organizations, societies, associations, and institutions—originally incorporated in England—were dissolved and ceased to hold legal ownership over their assets and operations in India:

  • Church Missionary Society

    (CMS), incorporated in England

  • Church Missionary Trust Association Limited (CMTA Ltd.), incorporated in England

  • Church of England Zenana Missionary Society (CEZMS), incorporated in England

All assets, properties, and ongoing programs of these entities were officially handed over to a newly established indigenous body, Church Missionary Trust Association of All India (CMTA India), to be owned and managed by the local people of India.

This newly formed association was designated as the exclusive legal owner of all properties, institutions, and programs previously operated by the aforementioned missionary bodies. This includes:

  • Educational institutions (schools, colleges, hostels)

  • Social welfare programs and projects

  • Religious and ecclesiastical functions, including the authority to:

  • Establish churches and seminaries

  • Administer religious educational institutions

  • Ordain and consecrate Deacons, Presbyters, Bishops, Assistant Bishops, and Moderators within India

SPECIAL RESOLUTION (Formation of CMTA India)

At a General Body Meeting held on 18th February 1928 in Bombay, India, it was unanimously resolved:

1.That Church Missionary Society (CMS), Church Missionary Trust Association Limited (CMTA Ltd.), and Church of England Zenana Missionary Society (CEZMS) shall be merged, amalgamated, and reconstituted as a single legal entity under the name:

Church Missionary Trust Association of All India

This reconstitution would be effective from the date of its registration with the Registrar of Joint Stock Companies in India, in accordance with the Indian Church Act, 1927 and the Indian Church Measures, 1927.

2.That the representatives of the above-mentioned organizations would voluntarily relinquish all ownership, management, and property rights in their respective projects and programs across India.

3.That all such assets, institutions, and operations would henceforth devolve to CMTA India, which would act as the sole legal successor.

4.That the new association would be formally registered under the name Church Missionary Trust Association of All India with the same aims and objectives, in accordance with the Societies Registration Act, 1860.

TRANSITION TO PAKISTAN

Following the Partition of India in 1947, and in accordance with its Constitution and Articles of Association, the organization was reconstituted in Pakistan. The jurisdiction of the association shifted accordingly, and it was renamed:

Church Missionary Trust Association of Pakistan (CMTA Pakistan)

The organization retained the same registration number and legal identity, and continued to function within the jurisdiction of Pakistan under the Amended Constitution of 1948.

Elections for the Executive Committee/Board have since been held every five years, as stipulated in the Constitution and Bylaws, under the supervision of an Administrative Committee and overseen by the preceding Board.
